Post-op Complications Pose Strongest Readmission Risk

by: kcarew

For years, doctors have known the seriousness of postoperative complications for their surgical patients, but now the level of severity is clear.

According to a study published in the September issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, about one in 10 general surgery patients return to the hospital, mostly due to postoperative complications.

Are Your Docs Emotionally Wiped Out?

by: kcarew

Nearly half of physicians report symptoms of burnout, according to the results of a Mayo Clinic study released this week. The research, published online in the Archives of Internal Medicine, reveals that the burnout rates are significantly higher in physicians, specifically for those providing front-line care, than it is in the general U.S. work force.

Readmission Rates Aren’t Budging

by: kcarew

Despite the industry’s best efforts, hospital readmission rates aren't dropping. According to Hospital Compare data released last month, the number of people returning to the hospitals and being readmitted is staying disappointingly high.

Both Kaiser Health News and The Washington Post reported in July that more than one in five Medicare patients are readmitted within 30 days of discharge. And with reimbursement penalties scheduled to hit hospitals this October, the stagnant rates are causing alarm.

by: kcarew

In 2010, researchers at University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing’s Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research calculated that if a mandated minimum nurse-to-patient ratio was applied locally, it would prevent 222 surgical deaths annually in New Jersey and 264 in Pennsylvania alone.

Five Substantial Benefits of a Successful Post-Acute Strategy

Five Substantial Benefits of a Successful Post-Acute Strategy

by: Brent_Feorene

By: Brent Feorene
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has fundamentally changed the healthcare marketplace and permanently altered the role of post-acute programs in the strategic response of health systems.

This is a challenge for many hospital systems as they have under invested in management talent and the infrastructure of their post-acute capabilities. As payment models evolve and providers become more accountable for patient’s costs, care will be driven to the lowest cost settings. A hospital’s post-acute capabilities could be an engine that drives profitability or the burden that causes missed opportunity.

Heart Attacks Ambushing Women?

Heart Attacks Ambushing Women?

by: kcarew

According to Dr. Aristotelis Vlahos, the medical director of interventional cardiology at Riverview Medical Center in New Jersey, "Fifty percent of heart attacks are entirely silent, a number that's even higher in women and diabetics." But why is it higher with women? Women often do not take the range of heart attack symptoms seriously (upset stomach, shoulder pain, toothache, flu-like symptoms, hand tingling, fatigue) or they attribute them to other, more common ailments.

Don’t Get Sick in July

Don’t Get Sick in July

by: kcarew

Does the 'July Effect' really exist?

Ah, July. For most, just the word ‘July’ conjures up images of picnics, vacations and fireworks. But for employees at teaching hospitals, the month of July means something completely different…new interns, fresh out of medical school and arriving at academic medical centers. It also means that existing residents and fellows will be moving on to self-managed, patient care positions.

All new to their roles, all inexperienced, all more susceptible to making mistakes.

Check-in Kiosks: Coming to a Doctor’s Office Near You?

by: kcarew

Imagine starting your annual physical at a check-in kiosk similar to the ones commonly used at airports. Instead of writing your medical history on a clipboard, you input it via keyboard or swipe a card when you arrive.
