The Challenge
For over 15 years, AccountChek has helped borrowers skip the paper chase when qualifying for a loan. Borrowers send their financial data straight to lenders in an underwriter-friendly format that reduces delays, eliminates manual errors, and mitigates fraud risk. To make this possible, Informative Research’s AccountChek platform needs reliable data and connections to enable borrowers to share their financial data and lenders to quickly verify their asset, income, and employment during the mortgage loan application process.

The Solution
To streamline the borrower experience and maintain connections that deliver the data that lenders need, Informative Research turned to MX as its primary bank data aggregation partner.

Previously, borrowers using AccoutChek would need to satisfy multiple multi-factor authentication (MFA) requests before connecting their accounts to the system. Using MX’s direct connections, AccountChek has condensed its consumer authentication process, thus eliminating a significant source of borrower drop-off and reduced success and completion rates. This shift also helped shorten the consumer authorization and enrollment process from an average of 2:45 minutes to less than 0:30 seconds.

Additionally, Informative Research recognized the value of modern banking connections and Open Finance to create more secure, lasting connections. In working with MX, the company has been transparently switching its bank connections to modern Open Authorization (OAuth) connections — improving connection success rates to above 99% for users connecting their accounts.

This improved experience has created a competitive advantage for AccountChek, speeding up the lending process and streamlining the borrower experience. In the last 12 months, Informative Research has completed 32.9 million aggregation and verification jobs, with a 97% overall job completion status. The average connection speed for an aggregation job is 24.64 seconds, while the average connection speed for a verifications job is 4.44 seconds.

In total, AccountChek has helped to close over 3.1 million mortgage loans with the help of MX, totaling over $1.1 trillion.

Data quality is very important. If you look at the use case associated with mortgage lending, there is a very high bar of data that needs to be provided. And we've worked in partnership with MX to continually drive that bar higher.

YNAB (previously You Need A Budget) is a simple method and budgeting app that has taught millions of people to change their relationship with money. People find YNAB because they want to pay off debt and make financial progress — they stay because they've stopped fighting about money and have never slept better. The Challenge
YNAB uses a zero-based budgeting system which guides spending decisions through a simple set of habits, asking consumers to make a plan for every dollar they earn, or in other words, give each dollar a specific job. This helps them become more intentional with their spending so they can spend purposefully, save aspirationally, and even give generously.

However, with various financial accounts spread across different financial institutions and fintechs (checkings, savings, credit cards, loans, etc.), it’s difficult for consumers to get a clear picture of their finances. YNAB needed a way to enable consumers to easily connect all of their financial accounts so that they can use YNAB to help them meet their financial goals without the need to manually enter transactions into the tool.

The Solution
YNAB turned to MX to enable its customers to easily link their external financial accounts into its app so that they always have up-to-date transaction data. Transactions form the foundation of a functioning and real life spending plan, and those who use YNAB’s Direct Import feature expect a high quality experience from start to finish. YNAB is invested in the health of connections even beyond the initial connection experience, because reliable connection health, excellent data quality, and frequent transaction imports will create more engagement and trust in YNAB over time.

Creating a linked account is an essential part of onboarding with YNAB, and 90% of users who start the linked account flow using MX account aggregation are able to create at least one linked account. Additionally, they see more than97% aggregation success rate with more than 57% of the connections made via secure OAuth connections. These OAuth connections average about 4 seconds to connect — allowing YNAB customers to see a near-instant view of their finances in one place. In total, MX aggregates an average of 13 accounts connected per user, representing more than one million connected accounts.

In addition, MX data enhancement services provide cleansed and categorized transactions that feed into YNAB’s interface so YNAB can properly categorize spending automatically for its users and present it in a way that lessens the burden on consumers trying to make sense of indecipherable raw transaction data as they manage their money. Suncoast Credit Union is the largest credit union in the state of Florida, the 8th largest in the United States based on membership, and the 11th largest in the United States based on its $17.5 billion in assets. Chartered in 1934 as Hillsborough County Teachers Credit Union, Suncoast Credit Union currently operates 78 full-service branches and serves more than one million members across Florida. As a community credit union, anyone who lives, works, attends school, or worships in Suncoast Credit Union’s service area is eligible for membership. In 2021, Suncoast Credit Union’s field of membership was expanded to include public K-12 teachers, college educators, and educational support staff from all of Florida’s 67 counties.

The Challenge
Suncoast Credit Union wants to ensure that all products and services it offers meet the needs of its members — both in terms of the offerings themselves and how to make them easily accessible. One initial challenge that Suncoast Credit Union was looking to solve was how to reduce disputes and call center volume. 

“How can we help members more easily understand what’s happening with their finances?” asked Jana Manley, Senior Vice President, Marketing and Digital Strategy, at Suncoast Credit Union.

The Solution
The credit union worked with MX to leverage its advanced data enhancement tools to turn raw, illegible transaction data into clear information so that members can easily understand and act on financial data.

“How many times have you looked at your financial transactions on digital banking and been unable to decipher what you’re actually looking at? This visual string of uncleansed data can create a little bit of fear which often leads to a call to your financial institution to make sure it’s legitimate,” said Manley.

MX’s advanced data enhancement transforms raw, indecipherable financial data into simple, clear transaction information and insights with cleansing, categorization, and added context. In just 12 months, MX cleansed and enhanced nearly 5 million transactions for Suncoast and its consumers — an average of 19 transactions per second. With a clearer presentation of what the transaction was — and not only what it was but with whom it was made and where — is helping Suncoast Credit Union to reduce call volumes related to people calling to dispute something they don’t recognize. 

Moving forward, Suncoast Credit Union is looking to add personal financial management tools and insights from MX to help its members on their road to financial wellness and financial health.

The way that MX delivers the service is more than factual; it's conversational and feels very natural within a digital interaction. Synergy Credit Union is the fifth largest credit union in the province of Saskatchewan and is one of the leading credit unions in Canada, with more than $2.4 billion in assets under administration. Synergy Credit Union provides core banking services through the traditional branch network, the Canada-wide AccuLink ATM network, online banking, mobile web banking, as well as through the Member Contact Centre.

The Challenge
Synergy Credit Union has been serving its communities since 1943 and is dedicated to making its members’ lives and communities prosperous. However, money remains the biggest source of stress among Canadians for the sixth year in a row according to FP Canada’s 2023 Financial Stress Index. Synergy CU recognizes it needs to make the money experience as frictionless as possible so it can serve members more effectively. At the same time, enabling its members to see a 360-degree view of their finances — including accounts with Synergy CU and other external accounts — was important to help members with their financial wellness goals.

"When it comes to personal financial management and budgeting, it's something that everyone needs, whether your income is high or medium or low. We all need that support. And so having guided online financial advice is vital,” said Trevor Beaton, Chief Innovation and People Officer at Synergy Credit Union."

The Solution
The credit union worked to implement MX’s financial management tools — Personal Financial Management (PFM) and Insights — into its digital banking solutions hosted by Celero, a leader in digital technology and integration solutions that partners closely with MX. Celero enables credit unions to integrate MX solutions into its digital banking platform to provide their members with personalized, secure financial guidance about spending, budgeting, debt management, and account aggregation online and through a mobile banking app.

When Synergy CU heard about MX, the credit union quickly found that the values of the two companies aligned very closely. “We raised our hand to be an early champion for this joint offering from MX and Celero because it aligns to our values and goals to help members achieve their financial goals,” said Trevor Beaton, Chief Innovation and People Officer at Synergy Credit Union. “Adding MX’s personal financial management capabilities to our Celero-hosted platform will be a great benefit to our members. If they’re able to save more, if they can pay down debt faster, if they have better insights into their finances — all these things help create stronger financial outcomes for our members and ultimately, lead to a stronger Synergy Credit Union.”

In particular, Synergy CU was excited to leverage MX account aggregation to enable its members to connect external accounts easily and seamlessly to gain a more complete picture of their finances. To date, Synergy CU members have aggregated external accounts including investments, credit cards, checking, and savings. Overall, 93.4% of aggregation requests are successfully connected in 15 seconds or less on average.

Synergy CU is also leveraging MX Insights to make it easy for members to better understand what’s happening with their money and what they can do to improve their financial situation in real time. To make it easy for members to access and use these Insights, along with MX PFM tools, Synergy CU placed the tools front and center on the homepage. As a result, the credit union has found that those that view Insights are more engaged and login more frequently. Furthermore, Synergy CU has averaged more than 200,000 digital insights monthly to provide members with real-time digital advice that complements proactive adviser calls made to its members.

Synergy CU also observed an increase in its member voice survey results from 72% (Very Good) to 77% (Excellent). Specifically, digital results were rated much higher than in the prior year — the launch of the Money Management tools likely played a big part in this increase.

For instance, Synergy CU can not only see externally held accounts linked by its members but also analyze transaction data to identify externally held accounts and payments that are leaving the credit union. By better understanding funds leaving its institution, Synergy CU plans to use this information to create uniquely targeted messaging and marketing campaigns to grow its business and bring those accounts back to Synergy CU.

Deposits are the lifeblood of financial institutions. However, they are falling across a majority of financial institutions. In fact, S&P Global reported the the U.S. banking industry's deposits contracted 4.8% year over year. From catastrophic bank runs to consumers flocking to new accounts from technology industry giants, what’s key to reversing the trend?

The Challenge
A complex set of factors are making it harder than ever to grow and retain deposits. Coupled with increasing demands from consumers for personalized and engaging digital experiences, financial institutions may continue to see declining deposits unless they take action. In fact, today’s digital-first consumers are more willing to switch to a new provider than ever before. Half of consumers have opened a new bank account or considered switching financial providers within the last 6 months, according to MX research.

The Solution
MX looked closely at the behavior of more than 10 million consumers over the past 12 months and found that engagement with financial wellness tools is key to growing and retaining deposits. In fact, the data shows consumers who actively engaged with their digital financial solution consistently outperformed non-engaged users.

Consumers who engage regularly and often with mobile and digital banking services are more loyal, have less turnover, and maintain higher deposit balances than less engaged consumers. And, the more they engage, the greater the positive impact on deposits.
Consumers who regularly engaged with MX’s personal financial management (PFM) features — specifically creating and using budgets — within their mobile banking experiences had the highest deposit levels and grew those balances during the year, even as deposit balances fell for those who didn’t engage as often.



While growing their deposit balances, these users also managed their credit card debt more effectively than others, even during a period of high inflation and increasing consumer debt levels.

These are great examples of how using MX’s financial wellness widgets and tools enable consumers to better understand and manage their finances. With the insights generated from these tools, consumers are able to spend less than they earn, build up their savings, and avoid debt — all of which drive improved financial wellness for the consumer and in turn, better outcomes for the financial institution.


In addition, our data shows the first 30 days of onboarding a consumer can influence and build long-term digital engagement.

Just look at the stats:

Consumers who interact with MX’s PFM tools at least one day during their first month are 176% more likely to be digitally engaged after one year than those who don’t.

Consumers who establish direct deposit during the first 30 days of their banking relationship are 76% more likely to be digitally engaged a year later than those without direct deposit.

Consumers who connect at least one or more external financial accounts are 48% more likely to be digitally active a year later than those who don’t.

Consumers who make at least one mobile transfer during their first month are
195% more likely to be digitally engaged a year later than those who don’t.

Consumers who log in at least once during their first month are 26% more likely to be digitally engaged after a year.

For those who log in on at least four separate days during their first month, they are 550% more likely to still be active a year later.

“While we don’t have specific details about each financial institution’s onboarding experience, the data clearly shows that efforts to educate and engage consumers are critical to long-term success,” said Clint Johnson, Director of Professional Services at MX. “By focusing on customer outcomes and creating personalized, intuitive experiences from Day 1 of the relationship, financial institutions can not only maintain deposits but grow them — even in an increasingly challenging market.”

Voya launched the myVoyage mobile app with the Personalized Enrollment Guidance tool to help employees more effectively choose their benefits during open enrollment and use them throughout the year. However, without the ability to see the interconnections between their benefits and financial accounts, Voya found that employees were often at risk of being either over or underinsured.

The Solution
Voya integrated MX Insights — a financial wellness tool that serves up personalized, real-time financial information and advice — in myVoyage to give users a seamless experience to understand what’s happening with their finances and to drive more consistent engagement with the app.

Each login to myVoyage can drive a more engaged benefits experience and is intended to help employees meet their long-term retirement goals. By increasing usage and engagement, Voya is helping employees to more effectively manage their benefits and best optimize their selections to meet their financial needs. “We’re focused on meeting people where they are, whether someone is just starting out in the workforce or if they’ve already built up their savings. According to Kehoe, MX Insights helps engage customers by moving them back to the myVoyage experience with notifications about timely financial information. “With insights,” Kehoe says, “we’re able to send out nudges on things like subscriptions or upcoming bills to bring the user back into the myVoyage experience. Since its launch, Voya has seen some real-life results with myVoyage. Thirteen percent of employees that have used this experience have increased their retirement savings. On average, they saved $1,200 more for healthcare savings, and employers save $800 per employee when those employees optimize their benefits decisions.

Additionally, Voya is also leveraging MX Data Access for employees seeking more secure access to their Voya accounts and a reliable OAuth connection for those who want to aggregate their Voya accounts and share their financial data with other third parties. Leveraging MX’s open finance Data Access API enables employees to connect and share financial data on their terms, without sharing their username and password.

Affinity Federal Credit Union is a member-owned, not-for-profit, full service financial institution that serves as the largest credit union headquartered in the state of New Jersey. The mission of Affinity is to push profits back to its members in the form of great rates, fewer fees, and a better banking experience. The Challenge Affinity’s money management product (powered by MX) was buried in the online experience, making it hard for users to find it. This led to low adoption and engagement rates. The credit union’s member-first mentality was one of the driving factors behind Affinity’s desire to increase the experience around its online and mobile banking products. More users in the platform would provide additional insight for ways to improve member experience. “Specifically, we wanted to ensure that more of our members could access the services from a device of their choice and add their external account connections,” said Shireen Davis, AVP, Digital Information Technology at Affinity Federal Credit Union. “Aggregating all those external accounts would allow us to capture a much larger data set from which we can gain further insight into ways to more effectively serve our members.” The Solution WaFd Bank consulted with MX and embarked on a middleware project called a “Path to Freedom” to modernize its banking infrastructure and embrace various API integrations to power a new, data-driven online experience. Without pouring additional money into marketing efforts, Affinity Federal Credit Union increased engagement, improved member insights, and enhanced member experience. Affinity implemented MX widgets in more prominent and accessible locations on its online dashboard and increased engagement and external accounts within six months! Mini Widgets, Massive Results Although money management features were available on Affinity’s online banking site, adoption was low because of placement. The decision was made to add mini-widgets onto the main interface, and the results were staggering. Go Mobile or Go Home Motivated by the successful early adoption rates in the first three months, Affinity made another push by introducing mobile widgets to the offering. Emprise noticed only 7,500 of its 39,000 digital banking customers leveraged its money management tools — a massive opportunity to more effectively reach and serve its customers. The bank’s original platform buried the money management tools within its digital experience, making them difficult to find, and put the experience behind an enrollment wall that required consumers to opt in before they could start using the tools. Additional challenges included a disparate online and mobile experience and a dependency on online (browser) based enrollment. Emprise wanted to create an experience that was intuitive and easy to access, so all of its customers could easily find and leverage the tools to improve their financial lives. To bring its vision to life, Emprise partnered with Tyfone and MX to place the money management tools at the forefront of a mobile-first digital banking experience. With the new streamlined experience, Emprise has enabled money management tools for 100% of their now roughly 45,000 digital banking customers — a 5x increase. “We saw a significant lift in customer engagement when we focused on improving the digital experience. Before, most users logged into the MX tools just one day per month on average. After implementation, we saw this jump to an average 8 days per month,” explains Shelby Chapman, Vice President of Strategic Partners at Emprise Bank. In addition to making the tools more accessible, Emprise added MX Insights — a personalized feed of financial insights that provides consumers with guidance on actions they can take to improve their financial lives. By incorporating MX Insights, Emprise is providing its customers with an easy way to understand their finances better. “Not everybody wants to do a budget. That’s a lot of work,” Chapman says. “Most people just want you to tell them quickly — Where am I? What’s happening? And, we’ve seen a really positive impact for customers, especially on things like purchases that have double posted and they didn’t realize that the merchant charged them twice. You can bring things to their attention that they may have overlooked, and it feels easy.” Customer engagement continues to build as Emprise increases consumer trust and helps them get closer to reaching their financial goals. For instance, the more customers view their personalized financial insights, the more often they log in. Currently 56% of active users regularly engage with the financial tools. Emprise is also leveraging cleansed and categorized data provided by MX to inform its business decisions. By pulling MX data into its cloud environment, the bank’s predictive analytics team can build predictive models that help them better understand customers and deliver personalized messages and offers that match each customer’s situation and goals. For example, the Emprise team is using discovered account information — information about accounts held externally at other institutions, derived from consumer-permissioned data — to inform upsell and cross sell opportunities, as well as deliver the right nudges and next steps for customers to take in its digital marketing platform. “There’s a ton of potential and I think we’re just scratching the surface,” Chapman explains. “At Emprise, our mission is empowering people to thrive.
